Exploring Space Innovation with Zhen Ning Ng: Interview with the CEO of NuSpace

By Vedika Lakhotiya and Anoushka D’Sa

Zhen Ning Ng, the CEO and Founder of NuSpace Singapore, is a research engineer specialising in Cube Satellites. His career journey includes working at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and being part of the DSO National Laboratories.

NuSpace Singapore is dedicated to enhancing connectivity in remote locations throughout Asia through Cube Satellites. Cube Satellites, typically 10 x 10 x 10 cm large and weighing 1.3 kg, can be combined into larger units, significantly reducing launch costs and making satellite technology more accessible for commercial use. They are modular and cost-effective devices that are transforming satellite technology.

NuSpace was born out of Ng’s personal experience, where a hike in the Grand Canyon highlighted the critical need for reliable internet connectivity in remote areas. Unlike traditional satellites that rely on power sources, NuSpace’s satellites leverage IoT technology, providing battery-powered connectivity that lasts 3-5 years.

The company's long-term vision is to offer IoT connectivity as well as other forms of connectivity across Asia, addressing gaps in satellite-based environmental monitoring, and to promote sustainable practices.

Despite challenges such as failed satellite launches and technical issues with radio frequencies, Ng remained undeterred. NuSpace is also committed to data privacy & security, and sustainable satellite disposal, aiming to minimise space debris. Ng’s advice to aspiring space engineers or entrepreneurs is to stay curious, motivated, and resilient in the face of challenges. He also believes that it is important to remain driven throughout the journey and to have enough motivation and courage to push through the difficult times.
