Metaverse, Mixed Reality, and its Nearing Future — Coey Lam

By Albert Lee

This month, we had the privilege of interviewing Ms Coey Lam, who leads groundbreaking VR and MR innovations through the Meta Quest headsets. With thousands of gaming titles already available on Quest, Meta has recently ventured into the Entertainment space, collaborating with artists like Sabrina Carpenter and platforms such as Netflix to bring their content to life in the Metaverse.

During our conversation, Coey offered fascinating insights into the Metaverse's mechanics and the distinctions between Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and the emerging Mixed Reality (MR) technology, which seamlessly integrates multitasking across VR and AR. She shared her vision for the future of Quest, which could revolutionize daily tasks, foster global collaboration, and unlock limitless possibilities.

For students interested in exploring MR in the future, Coey gives advice to students to pursue coding and technology, engage with developer communities, and utilize Meta’s resources. She shares her passion for her work in MR and her enthusiasm to continue shaping its future through innovative projects and collaborations.

Coey, from Meta Singapore, leads metaverse content in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, collaborating with entertainment partners for concerts, streaming, and many other different digital content. Meta Quest 3 brought in Mixed Reality, mixing virtual and augmented realities to put virtual objects in the physical surroundings. On the other hand, as opposed to AR, where digital information is projected over the real world, and VR, which immerses users into a virtual world, MR lets the user seamlessly multitask between these realities.

Future applications include portable devices like glasses for work, navigation, and entertainment, revolutionizing daily tasks. Metaverse concerts, such as those by Sabrina Carpenter, expand social interaction, allowing global participation and enhancing production. MR's potential extends to streaming, multitasking, and community engagement.

Coey encourages students to pursue coding and technology, engage with developer communities, and utilize Meta’s resources. She shares her passion for her work in MR and her enthusiasm to continue shaping its future through innovative projects and collaborations.
