Singapore is quickly becoming a hub for space technology, with several organisations leading innovative projects that push the boundaries of what’s possible in space. These innovations are not only putting Singapore on the map but are also offering unique opportunities for aspiring engineers, technologists, and scientists to be a part of this exciting shift.
Singapore’s Growing Space-Tech Industry: Space-Tech Advancements You Can Pursue
By Vedika Lakhotiya
NuSpace: Making IoT Possible from Space
NuSpace is changing the way we think about the Internet of Things (IoT). Normally, IoT relies on ground-based infrastructure, but NuSpace has developed satellite-based IoT connectivity. Using satellites, they can connect sensors in remote areas—like farms, forests, and even out at sea—directly to the internet. This means that farmers can monitor their crops or livestock from anywhere, or researchers can track environmental data in real time, without needing local infrastructure
STAR@NUS: Developing Smarter Satellites
The Satellite Technology and Research (STAR) Centre at NUS is making big moves in satellite tech. Their project, Lumelite-4, helps with maritime communications, improving how ships stay connected while at sea. STAR NUS is also working on something called formation-flying satellites, where multiple satellites work together to gather data. This has huge potential for things like climate monitoring and disaster management.
Aliena: Propelling the Future of Satellites
One of the biggest challenges for satellites is propulsion—how they move and stay in orbit. Aliena is solving this problem with their electric propulsion systems, which use plasma (instead of traditional fuel) to move satellites around in space. This not only saves fuel but also helps satellites last longer and perform more complex tasks like adjusting their orbits
So What’s Next for Singapore’s Space Tech?
With companies like NuSpace, STAR NUS, and Aliena leading the charge, Singapore’s space industry is only going to grow. If you’re interested in space technology, learn more about satellite engineering, IoT applications, and even AI in space systems and stay up to date with the latest developments. Space is definitely a field where science, technology, and real-world problem-solving come together in exciting, futuristic ways.
